UK and EU Students - Herbal Medicine Diploma Course

About the Course

Herbal Medicine Diploma Course

What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal medicine has a long tradition in all cultures, and recent research has begun to prove some of the huge benefits of using herbs. Whereas much modern medicine has unwelcome side effects, herbs can provide a gentle, yet powerful, solution to a wide range of physical and emotional problems.

As well as relieving symptoms, herbal medicine also works on a deeper level to help patients return to full harmony. Herbal medicine is becoming ever more popular in the UK, as ever more people seek out qualified herbalists.

Why Study Herbal Medicine with The CNM?

The CNM Herbal Medicine Diploma Course provides high quality training that equips graduates to build highly successful practices. It is carefully structured so each study unit builds on the previous one, allowing students to develop their confidence and skills, and reach their full potential as professional Herbalists. Students are strongly encouraged to develop their own unique style of consultation and application.

One of the strengths of The College of Naturopathic Medicine course is that we draw on a variety of herbal traditions: we have expert lecturers in western, Ayurvedic (Indian) and Chinese herbal medicine.

Students study the energetic models of these systems, allowing them to make a multi–faceted, holistic diagnosis. Graduates can to draw on a wide variety of herbs from different traditions, helping them to provide the best possible treatment for their patients.

The Regulation of Herbal Medicine

In the UK, the Department of Health is expected to create a statutory register of practitioners within about three years. In order to use the title “Practitioner of Herbal Medicine”, therapists will have to be on the register. CNM is fully committed to gaining accreditation for its herbal medicine graduates, which would allow them to practice legally within the UK.

Duration: 2 years, 2 weekends per month, plus 2 sets of 10 days during the 2-year course.

Biochemistry and Pharmacology

Students will study these subjects in enough depth to get an understanding of how herbs work from a western, biomedical perspective. This will also give an insight into how certain western drugs work.

Pharmacognosy and Dispensing

Students will learn techniques of herb identification, so they can identify the correct herbs, and ensure they are of the best quality. They will learn procedures of setting up a herbal pharmacy, or of getting the most from an external pharmacy if they prefer to use one instead of setting up their own. Graduates will be kept fully informed of legislative requirements in this area, as the UK moves closer to statutory regulation.

Materia Medica

Students will cover a wide variety of herbs from many traditions, and become familiar with the qualities of each herb. The thorough knowledge of herbs gained in this Unit will form the basis for selecting the herbs for patients in clinic.

Herbal Energetics

Students will learn the basic energetic models of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal medicine. This will allow them to diagnose patients from different angles, and thereby create a comprehensive treatment programme of maximum effectiveness.

Diagnosis and Case Taking

In this Unit students will become confident in taking the cases of a variety of people. They will draw on the subtle Chinese methods of diagnosis, including pulse palpation and tongue observation. The diagnostic methods learned in this Unit will allow the formation of an accurate and precise diagnosis, which identifies the root cause of illnesses, and allows the development of an effective treatment plan.

Disease Differentiation

In herbal medicine, it is recognised that any one disease may be cause by a variety of energetic patterns. This means that everyone who comes in is seen as an individual, with a unique pattern of imbalance. This Unit allows students to differentiate the causes of a wide variety of common diseases seen in clinic, including digestive problems, gynaecology, nervous system disorders, musculo – skeletal problems, breathing problems, and mental - emotional problems.

Clinical Practice

We provide approximately 350 hours of clinical experience, after which students should be confident to take control of treatments of a very wide range of disorders.

Practitioner Development and Ethics

This Unit helps students focus on setting up and maintain a thriving practice. It helps The College of Naturopathic Medicine graduates to build the support systems they need to reach their full potential as practitioners of herbal medicine, and keeps them abreast of regulatory developments in complementary medicine.

Research and Dissertation

This Unit will teach research methods, so students can identify best practice, and most effective techniques. Students are supported in writing a dissertation.

Use the links below, or in the left-hand menu, to review each specific course detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to study in the UK?

You will need a student visa to study in the UK if you are NOT a citizen of an EEA country.

We have years of experience helping International Students successfully apply to study in the UK - the International Office of the CNM is here to help you. Please contact us and we will assist you in this process.

Please contact Lynne Ott with any questions about obtaining a visa.

What are the enrolment deadlines?

Typically, students enrol for the Autumn (Oct) and Spring (Feb) semesters. However, since our Biomedicine and Naturopathy courses are built around a modular system, new students can join a course throughout the year.

Please bear in mind that as an International student visa applications take an average of 12 to 14 weeks. Check with your local British Consulate for waiting times. Since our courses are built around a modular system, you can join a course throughout the year.

Can I work in the UK while I am a student?

Only European Economic Area (EEA) citizens can work in the UK without permission.

If you are from outside the EEA and you are on a course lasting more than six months you can work up to twenty hours per week during term-time and full-time during holidays. Permission is automatically granted for you to work. Consider, however, that your main reason for being in the UK is to study and our courses are very demanding, particularly if English is not your first language. If you want to study full time and combine courses such as Medicine, Naturopathy and Specialist Training, you should consider carefully whether you have time to work and study without putting your education at risk.

What do the course fees cover?

The course fees cover teaching, assessment, examinations, and graduation.

The course fees do NOT cover the costs of any study materials (books, texts, etc), case studies, clinical hours, travel, personal stationery, digital media and equipment like mobile phones and computers, accommodation, or general living costs.

How do I pay my course fees?

Fees are payable in full at the beginning of each academic year of your course. Per the requirements of your student visa, The UK government require you pay at least your first year of study in full, in advance; the following years may be paid by instalments.

I have been asked to pay ‘enrolment fees’ - when should I pay these?

Enrolment fees must be paid within 7 days of your enrolment being approved. The enrolment fee is a one-time payment and is non-refundable. Once you have enroled, if you wish to take additional courses you will NOT have to pay any additional enrolment fees, provided you do not cancel your course of study.

I cannot afford to pay the course fees - will I be eligible for a loan?

The CNM can not make loans to students to pay course fees, and it is difficult for an international student to get a bank loan in the UK. If you need to take out a loan to pay your course fees, you are advised to make arrangements for this before you leave home.

International students are required to pay at least one full year of study in advance. The subsequent years can be paid by instalments, providing you show enough evidence to the British Mission that you can fulfil your agreement without requiring government funding.

For more information please contact international@naturopathy-uk.com.

Will I be eligible for free NHS health care?

If you are on a course of study that lasts six months or more, you are automatically entitled to free health care from the National Health Service (NHS) relating to any condition which occurs after your arrival in the UK. This means you may register as a patient with an NHS doctor, known as a General Practitioner (GP), and dentist. If a doctor prescribes a course of medicine for you, you may have to pay the prescription charge and you may have to pay for dental treatment.

What does it cost to live in the UK while I study?

Below find some approximate costs for basic needs.

  • Accommodation: £300 to £400 for a basic room, per month
  • Heat and light (if not included): £20 to £40, per month
  • Food (if not included) £100 to £200, per month
  • Textbooks and study materials: £40, per month
  • Laundry: £20, per month
  • Personal hygiene, haircut, cosmetics, etc: £20 to £40, per month
  • Restaurant meal (without drinks): £10 minimum, per person
  • Entertainment (film, a night out, etc): £20 minimum, per person
  • Travel fares (quite close to place of study): £4 to £8, per day

Do I need to register with the Police?

If your visa states “Register with UK police on arrival” or “Register with the police within seven days”, you must do this within the time limit stated.

Can I drive a car in the UK?

If you drive a car in Great Britain you must make sure that the car is registered, taxed and insured for your use. It is against the law to drive without all the documents relating to registration, road tax and insurance being fully up-to-date.

If you have a licence issued by a non-EEA country you are allowed to drive in the UK for 12 months after your arrival using your international licence, but after your first 12 months in Great Britain you must apply for and acquire a full GB licence.

Can my spouse work in the UK while I am a student?

If your spouse is a citizen of an EEA country, they can work in the UK without permission. If your spouse is not from an EEA country, they should be able to work without needing permission provided they entered the UK as your dependant and you have permission to stay in the UK for twelve months or more. If you have children between the ages of 5 and 16, they are entitled to free education in the UK during the course of your stay.

Study Schedules

To meet the requirements of your student visa you must study full-time.

  • Full-time, weekday study is currently available at our London college only.
  • The diploma course study programmes last from 1 to 3 years.
  • Intake - typically, students enrol for the Autumn (Oct) and Spring (Feb) semesters. However, since our Biomedicine and Naturopathy courses are built around a modular system, new students can join a course throughout the year.
  • As a non-EU student, keep in mind that visa applications take an average of 12 to 14 weeks to process. Also, once you’ve become a CNM student, remember to renew your visa before it expires - give yourself plenty of time as the renewal process can take longer than you might expect.
