International Students - Naturopathic Nutrition Post Graduate

About the Course

What is Naturopathic Nutrition?

Naturopathic Nutrition stresses the use of whole and organic foods as medicine - an integral concept of healing in many indigenous societies. Today, we see that a return to chemical-free foods, along with other dietary measures, is an effective answer to many health complaints and common conditions.

CNM students learn about the physiological and biochemical processes involved in nourishment, and the energetic side of food as well.

Thousands of years ago, master healers in China perceived a way to classify food and disease according to simple, easily observed patterns; one eats cooling foods for overheated conditions, and warming foods are best for people who feel too cold. Detoxifying foods are for those who carry an excess of toxins, and building foods are good for deficient persons, and so on.

The traditional Chinese and East Indian Ayurvedic systems have been used with pinpoint accuracy to diagnose disease conditions, and to categorise foods as medicine.

The CNM Diploma Course in Naturopathic Nutrition brings together authentic traditions of Oriental medicine with current, Western research-based nutrition.

Why Study Naturopathic Nutrition with The CNM?

The CNM Naturopathic Nutrition Diploma Course provides high quality training that equips graduates to build highly successful practices. International Students - Naturopathy Post Graduate Diploma

About the Course

What is Naturopathy?

The principles of Naturopathy were first used by the Hippocratic School of Medicine in about 400B.C. The Greek philosopher Hippocrates believed in viewing the whole person in regards to finding a cause of disease, and using the laws of nature to induce cure. It was from this original school of thought that Naturopathy takes its principles. These principles are:

  • The healing power of nature- nature has the innate ability to heal
  • Identify and treat the cause - there is always an underlying cause, be it physical, mental or emotional
  • Do no harm- a naturopath will never use treatments that may create other conditions
  • Treat the whole person- when preparing a treatment plan, all aspects of a person’s being are taken into consideration
  • The physician as teacher- a naturopath empowers the client to take responsibility for his/her own health by teaching self-care
  • Prevention is better than cure - a naturopath may remove toxic substances and situations from a person’s lifestyle to prevent the onset of further disease

Why Study Naturopathy with The CNM?

The CNM Naturopathy diploma course provides high quality training that equips graduates to build highly successful practices. It is carefully structured so each study unit builds on the previous one, allowing students to develop their confidence and skills, and reach their full potential as professional Acupuncturists. International Students - Homeopathy Specialist Diploma Course

About the Course

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine which is based on the principle of “The Law of Similars” - the principle of like curing like - a substance which can cause symptoms in a healthy individual can also be used to treat those symptoms when they manifest as part of a disease.

It was developed about 200 years ago by a German Doctor called Samuel Hahnemann - a medic disillusioned with the ineffective and often barbaric treatments of the day.

Homeopaths do not treat physical, emotional and mental symptoms separately but take the view that they are all interconnected as facets of the patient’s suffering. This is what makes homeopathy a truly holistic and refined art.

Because the central principle requires the use of medicines that are often derived from toxic sources, homeopathic preparations are made in a special way which involves repeatedly diluting and shaking the medicines until they contain virtually no trace of the original substance. It is thought that the processes of preparation somehow imprint a characteristic energy pattern or blueprint of the substance onto the water in which they are diluted.

Why Study Homeopathy with The CNM?

The CNM Homeopathy Diploma Course provides high quality training that equips graduates to build highly successful practices. Students will study these subjects in enough depth to get an understanding of how herbs work from a western, biomedical perspective. This will also give an insight into how certain western drugs work.

Pharmacognosy and Dispensing

Students will learn techniques of herb identification, so they can identify the correct herbs, and ensure they are of the best quality. They will learn procedures of setting up a herbal pharmacy, or of getting the most from an external pharmacy if they prefer to use one instead of setting up their own. Graduates will be kept fully informed of legislative requirements in this area, as the UK moves closer to statutory regulation.

Materia Medica

Students will cover a wide variety of herbs from many traditions, and become familiar with the qualities of each herb. The thorough knowledge of herbs gained in this Unit will form the basis for selecting the herbs for patients in clinic.

Herbal Energetics

Students will learn the basic energetic models of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal medicine. This will allow them to diagnose patients from different angles, and thereby create a comprehensive treatment programme of maximum effectiveness.

Diagnosis and Case Taking

In this Unit students will become confident in taking the cases of a variety of people. They will draw on the subtle Chinese methods of diagnosis, including pulse palpation and tongue observation. The diagnostic methods learned in this Unit will allow the formation of an accurate and precise diagnosis, which identifies the root cause of illnesses, and allows the development of an effective treatment plan.

Disease Differentiation

In herbal medicine, it is recognised that any one disease may be cause by a variety of energetic patterns. This means that everyone who comes in is seen as an individual, with a unique pattern of imbalance. This Unit allows students to differentiate the causes of a wide variety of common diseases seen in clinic, including digestive problems, gynaecology, nervous system disorders, musculo – skeletal problems, breathing problems, and mental - emotional problems.

Clinical Practice

We provide approximately 350 hours of clinical experience, after which students should be confident to take control of treatments of a very wide range of disorders.

Practitioner Development and Ethics

This Unit helps students focus on setting up and maintain a thriving practice. It helps The College of Naturopathic Medicine graduates to build the support systems they need to reach their full potential as practitioners of herbal medicine, and keeps them abreast of regulatory developments in complementary medicine.

Research and Dissertation

This Unit will teach research methods, so students can identify best practice, and most effective techniques. Students are supported in writing a dissertation.

International Students - Acupuncture Specialist Diploma Course

About the Course

What is Acupuncture?

The power of acupuncture to restore the health of body and mind is increasingly recognised throughout the western world. Acupuncture has an extraordinary ability to change people’s lives. It works by releasing blockages to the body’s “qi”. Qi is energy, or the “life force”, which flows through energy pathways in the body. Modern research suggests that qi may be a form of bio-electricity.

Acupuncture works on a deep level to help patients recover their physical and mental harmony. Acupuncture is becoming ever more popular in the UK, and opportunities for both independent practice and within the NHS are growing all the time. Acupuncture is viewed very positively by the House of Lords Committee, the British Medical Association, and the World Health Organisation.

Why Study Acupuncture with The CNM?

The CNM Acupuncture Diploma Course provides high quality training that equips graduates to build highly successful practices. It is carefully structured so each study unit builds on the previous one, allowing students to develop their confidence and skills, and reach their full potential as professional Acupuncturists. Students are strongly encouraged to develop their own unique style of consultation and application.

Years 2 and 3 - Acupuncture

Acupuncture Specialist

TCM Theory I and II
These two Units give an understanding of the basic concepts of Chinese medicine, including yin/ yang, qi, five elements, causes of illness (including diet, emotions, stress, climate). They give a fresh and revealing insight into the forces which shape our lives.

Chinese Diagnosis
This Unit teaches the subtle Chinese methods of diagnosis, including pulse palpation, tongue observation, taking a case history, observation of body posture and colours. These unique diagnostic methods allow the formation of an accurate and precise diagnosis, which identifies the root cause of illnesses, and allows the development of a treatment plan.

Practical Techniques
As well as becoming confident in acupuncture, students learn other related techniques, such as moxibustion (burning a herb over certain points), vacuum cupping (to release toxins) and electro acupuncture.

Disease Differentiation
In Chinese medicine there is a saying “one disease, many patterns”. This means that everyone who comes in is seen as an individual, with a unique pattern of imbalance. For any one disease, there are usually a number of different causes. For example, asthma may be due to a kidney weakness, a lung weakness, or “phlegm”. This Unit allows students to differentiate the causes of a wide variety of common diseases seen in clinic, including digestive problems, gynaecology, nervous system disorders, musculo – skeletal problems, breathing problems, and mental - emotional problems.

Point Location
This Unit allows students to locate acupuncture points with ease and confidence. At CNM we encourage students to “tune in” to the points, to feel the quality of energy in them. This helps refine the diagnosis.

Clinical Practice
There is one Unit of clinical observation, and four Units of clinical practice. This provides 400 hours of clinical experience, after which students should be confident to take control of treatments of a very wide range of disorders.

Practitioner Development and Ethics
This Unit helps students focus on setting up and maintain a thriving practice. It helps CNM graduates to build the support systems they need to reach their full potential as acupuncturists, and keeps them abreast of regulatory developments in the acupuncture world.

Research and Dissertation
This Unit will teach research methods, so students can identify best practice, and most effective techniques. Students will be supported in writing a dissertation.
