Environmental Medicine

Did you know that high levels of toxins in the human body can be linked to common conditions such as infertility, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes?

We are suffering from a worldwide epidemic of chronic diseases, with environmental toxins playing a significant role. In this course produced exclusively for CNM by world-renowned naturopath, author and CNM patron, Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno, you will learn about the relationship between toxins and some of the world’s most common chronic illnesses such as diabetes, autoimmune conditions, thyroid disorders, ADHD, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, autism, cardiovascular conditions, infertility and cancers.

The Environmental Medicine course teaches you:

  • The role environmental toxins play in increasing oxidative stress and inflammation.

  • Which toxins are most problematic for certain conditions, their mechanisms of damage, how to avoid and detoxify them.

  • How to diagnose toxic load through clinical indications and laboratory testing.

  • The amounts and ratios of proteins, fats and carbohydrates that can either enhance or inhibit the clearance of toxicants from the bloodstream.

  • Polymorphisms that can reduce the ability of the body to metabolise toxins.

How Toxins Damage our Bodies

The word ‘toxin’ has been used extensively in the media nowadays, but most people don’t grasp precisely how toxins interact with human physiology. Basically, there are eight ways toxins damage our bodies:

  1. Toxins poison enzymes so they don’t work properly and that undermines countless bodily functions.
  2. Toxins displace structural minerals resulting in weaker bones.
  3. Toxins damage nearly all organs in our body.
  4. Toxins damage DNA, which increases the rate of ageing and degeneration.
  5. Toxins activate or suppress our genes in undesirable ways.
  6. Toxins damage cell membranes preventing them from getting important messages.
  7. Toxins interfere with hormones and cause imbalances.
  8. Toxins impair the ability of the body to detoxify.

About the course

The Environmental Medicine online course consists of 15 high-quality lecture PowerPoint handouts and 16 hours of filmed lectures, interactive activities and an exam. The course will explain how chronic exposure to a wide range of toxins undermines physiology; depletes antioxidants; and progressively damages DNA, cells, and tissues. It details why liver and kidneys must all be functioning well before the toxin breakdown begins and not be overloaded by any controllable toxin (pharmaceutical drugs, for example).

It provides advice on the most effective nutrients, botanicals and other integrative therapies that help metabolise and detoxify environmental toxins; and shows how common basic lab tests can be used to measure and monitor treatment efficacy.

What does the Environmental Medicine course cover?

The course is made up of 15 in-depth lectures and includes topics such as:

Toxins – The Primary Drivers of Disease

  • Common environmental toxins like pesticides and chemicals in plastics, otherwise known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), raise the risk of developing diabetes.
  • Heavy metals, especially mercury, are most commonly linked with autoimmune thyroid conditions.
  • Mould-releasing toxic gases called mycotoxins can attack the immune and nervous systems.
  • Toxins affecting fertility: PBS causes decreasing sperm count; heavy metals increase anovulation, impaired implantation and loss of foetal viability.

Diagnosing Toxicity and Living a Toxin-free Life

  • Different ways of measuring toxic load in patients (blood and urine tests, challenge testing for past exposures, toenail testing for arsenic).
  • The most harmful metal toxins, their sources, prevalence, mechanisms of damage, diseases caused and therapeutic interventions to support body elimination.
  • The most problematic persistent and non-persistent chemical toxins such as BPA, pesticides and phthalates, their effects on the body and practical strategies to eliminate them from your life.

Detoxification and Toxin-specific Protocols

  • How to ensure the body’s elimination channels are functioning well before taking a patient through a detoxification protocol.
  • The protocols to support the elimination of the key metal and chemical toxins.
  • Detoxification supporting foods and dietary approaches, fasting methods, saunas and more.
  • The importance of glutathione in detoxification and health, as well as strategies for increasing glutathione levels in the body.

How to Practise Environmental Medicine

  • Why some individuals are experiencing much greater damage from toxins than others and how to identify them.
  • If exposure to specific toxins is known, but there are no symptoms, directly measure to confirm correct diagnosis and then to monitor intervention efficacy.
  • Remember that significant symptoms do not manifest until sufficient damage has accumulated.
  • Intervention always starts with avoidance.

About the lecturer

Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno, ND

Qualifications:Bachelor of Science with Distinction, Naturopathic Doctor with Honours.

Background: Dr. Joseph Pizzorno is a licensed naturopathic physician, educator, researcher, clinician and lecturer, founding president of Bastyr University, Editor-in-Chief of Integrative Medicine, A Clinician’s Journal, Treasurer of Board of Institute for Functional Medicine and co-founder of American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Who should take the Environmental Medicine course?

This course is suitable mainly for natural health practitioners and is based on the latest research in the field of environmental toxins. It can equip you with the expertise needed to address the common chronic health conditions that are a result of environmental toxicity in practice. It also provides practical advice about how uniqueness of each person’s biochemistry affects susceptibility, types of testing that should be used to get the credible results, detoxification procedures that are effective for different types of toxins, and other interventions that can help to reduce toxic load.

There are no prerequisites to study, but it is advised that students have at least Level 3 knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology.
